Aquariums with salt water-Use of fluidized bed filters and activated carbon
In aquaculture facilities, fluidised bed filters were established to cope with high fish densities. The definition is very basic although their nature differs. They fill an acrylic or PVC tube with fine air. It is usually hung on the back of an aquarium or sump, or is standing freely inside the sump. The tube is either sealed to the bottom, or both ends to form a chamber under pressure. Water is pumped to the bottom of the tank, pushed through the sand upwards, and enters an outlet on top of the tube. The sand grains provide a huge amount of surface area for the colonization of nitrifying bacteria. Bacteria are fed as the sand grains and water flow in the tank, and some scrubbed loose from the sand ‘s surface. It allows the continuous growth of fresh nitrifying bacteria on the surface of the oil. Young, fast-growing colonies of nitrifying bacteria are far more effective in converting nitrates into waste products. Constant sand grinding ensures the bacteria remain in an exponential growth state. Such filters have been shown to be useful in public aquariums or central water systems with high waste generation from small fish densities. Dangerously high levels of ammonia should be reduced in a few hours when a seeded fluidized bed filter is applied to the unreadable amounts. By exposing carbon grains to high temperatures and pressures, activated carbon is formed, resulting in a very porous material that works much like a sponge. Activated carbon acts in 2 ways to extract organic compounds from the column of water. It traps organic compounds into its pores and chemically binds polar organic molecules to the carbon grain sheet. Activated carbon can be used in a number of ways depending on the form of installation to be used and the available space. The best results come when water is pushed into the carbon and no one has an ability to escape it.
